information about the program
RapidFermTech is a 5-week rapid upskilling program to train Fermentation Technicians, particularly for employment with Industrial Fermentation companies located in Nova Scotia, Canada. Applicants will be reviewed by employers who are in need of Fermentation Technicians and are interested in hiring graduates. The Industrial Fermentation industry is growing in Nova Scotia, and as such, fermentation skills are highly sought after and enable employees to build inspiring and well-compensated careers.
The RapidFermTech program will deliver a customized, focused curriculum, taking an industry-led approach to ensure the concepts and skills developed are aligned with industry needs. Participants will receive virtual and hands-on technical training with industry-representative equipment at both INNOV and the Verschuren Centre. This program will be unique in Canada, strengthening local industries and attracting international companies, creating an ‘anchoring’ effect where Nova Scotia and Canada become a preferred location for their operations.
Industrial Fermentation is an emerging and exciting process used to produce a range of sustainable, low-carbon and earth-friendly products. Our innovative local companies are continuously discovering applications for products created through the process of fermentation. Examples of products currently being made here include ingredients for human and animal health and nutrition and compounds used in cosmetics as well as dyes and pigments for the fashion industry.
The program is planned to start on October 28, 2024, with 40 hours of guided online content. After that, students will receive 1.5 weeks of hands-on training at INNOV in Grand Falls, NB, and 2 weeks of hands-on training at the Verschuren Centre in Sydney, NS. The hands-on part of the program will include training on industry-relevant fermentation equipment. Support for travel costs is available for the INNOV portion of hands-on training.
Development and delivery of the RapidFermTech curriculum has received financial support from Upskill Canada, powered by Palette Skills, in collaboration with the Government of Canada, the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, the Greenspring Bioinnovation Hub, and contributions from employer partners.
