What is Palette?

Palette is a national non-profit organization mandated to support fast-growing companies find the talent they need by connecting them with mid-career workers experiencing job transitions due to automation. We run retraining and upskilling programs as well as provide opportunities to work in a paid placements at fast-growing companies.

In 2019 we launched our first program focused on helping people launch their career in sales at tech companies in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Why should I attend SalesCamp? Can’t I just apply directly to these companies?

You can always apply for jobs on your own. Here are some reasons why working with us is better:

We connect you directly with hiring managers. It takes on average 3-months to get a job and increasingly hiring managers are relying on their personal referral network to find their next hire.  The companies we work with trust our ability to find and train high-quality talent which is why when we put you in front of hiring managers, they act fast.

We help you  to hit the ground running. Our intensive hands-on learning approach means more doing and trying that gives you the expert skills and experience that would otherwise take years to develop. You also practice the art of selling using our hiring partners’ real-life scenarios giving you a leg up compared to other new hires.

We help you adapt. You don’t only learn foundational sales skills, you also learn creative problem solving skills that help you accelerate your career and adapt -- not just in this way of automation and disruption, but in all future waves you encounter.  

We support you after you're hired. When you join SalesCamp, you join a community of mentors and classmates, a peer network that you can lean on to support you as you launch this new career. Never take on a work challenge alone, again.

Why is Palette focused on tech sales?

At Palette, our focus is to get as many people as many full-time and secure jobs as possible.

The Toronto tech sector is growing. Toronto added more technology jobs than any other North American city in 2017. Yet tech companies are struggling to find the talent they need especially when it comes to sales. In fact, many tech companies say the inability to find quality sales talent limits their ability to grow further making them eager to hire fast.

If you’re looking to launch a new career, getting into tech sales in Toronto is a great career to launch into. You don’t need to be a developer or go back to school full time to excel in sales. We believe you’ve already developed and used sales skills such as active listening, persistence, resourcefulness, throughout your career, no matter the role and the additional skills to excel in a sales career can be further developed at any time through an intensive program like SalesCamp.

Am I qualified to be a participant?

We are looking for people who are:

  • Excited about the possibility of working in sales at a fast-growing technology company in the GTA.

  • Have at least 5 years of work experience and have recently lost your job, feel that your job is not secure because of changes in your company or industry, or are under-employed relative to your education or abilities.

  • Have strong communication skills, are good listeners, resourceful, persistent, have a strong work ethic and aren’t afraid to leave your comfort zone.

  • Able to attend a one week full-time program and complete a paid job placement in the GTA for 3 months immediately after SalesCamp.

  • Eligible to work in Canada.

When and where will you be running the program?

SalesCamp will take place at the following times:

  • June 17-21, 2019

  • September 23-27, 2019

  • Winter 2020 (exact dates TBD)

SalesCamp is full-time and held during work hours. All SalesCamp sessions will be held at a state-of-the-art studio on Toronto’s Waterfront, a 15-minute walk from Union Station

When should I apply?

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, so apply now for our September cohort to hold your space.

How do you evaluate candidates?

We’re not fixated on traditional credentials like a business degree or relevant work experience. We evaluate candidates on their drive, potential to learn new skills quickly, ability to work in a team in a fast paced environment and has a sales mindset (i.e., good communication and listening skills, resourceful, resilience, curious etc).

The process has two phases: online application and an in-person interview. If you demonstrate that you’re motivated and have the foundational skills to be successful we will invite you to join our program.

What kinds of jobs do you place participants in?

We place participants in a variety of sales jobs such as:

  • Inside sales

  • Business development representative

  • Sales representative

  • Account executive

  • Account manager

  • Sales engineer

How much money will I be making in these roles?

Compensation varies by role and company but typically starts around $45,000 - $55,000 plus commission with an opportunity to quickly increase based on performance.

Am I guaranteed a job?

All of our hiring partners are actively hiring sales talent and interested in speaking to you. During the SalesCamp, there will be an opportunity to apply and interview for the job placements with companies and meet hiring managers face to face. We believe that acceptance into our program and the skills you will develop in during our SalesCamp will make you strong candidates, and we have taken multiple steps to ensure an extremely high likelihood of job placement for all candidates. That said, we cannot guarantee job placements through this program.

Are any of the jobs part-time?

No, you will be working as a full-time professional.

I’ve already been working for many years -- I don’t want or have the time to start from scratch.

We respect the skills and experience you already have. We also know that your priority is to find a good job as soon as possible. This is why our program can be so short -- it’s designed to build on your existing experience and optimized to move you through your career transition quickly and effectively.

We also know that tech companies are in great need of people who can lead teams and solve complex problems. While you may start in an entry level sales job, companies are hiring you because they believe you can quickly learn the ropes and accelerate into senior positions.

What kinds of companies do you match candidates with?

We have a range of employer partners in the tech sector in the GTA and are adding new employers every week. Check the SalesCamp info page for an up-to-date list.

What if the company doesn’t offer me a job?

The company has a strong interest in your success and is likely to offer you a job. If they don’t, we will help you locate other opportunities. Remember tech sales jobs, and the skills you will develop through this program, are highly sought after by all tech companies in the GTA. Even if a job with your initial placement company does not work out, you will be well positioned to succeed in this new career field.

How much does it cost?

If your application is approved, there is a $250 fee to hold your space. The SalesCamp program is valued at $3,000 per person, but thanks to the generous support of our funders we are able to provide deep cost reductions. If cost is a barrier, let us know and we can discuss opportunities for financial support.

I’m not interested in tech sales and/or I don’t live in the GTA. Does Palette have a program for me?

At the moment we only have programs in tech sales in Toronto. However, we’re planning additional cohorts focused on different skills and in different regions across the country. Sign up to hear more about other cohorts, program insights and other important news.
